Hi!
Skype 4.0 for Linux has just been released! Thought it wouldn’t happen anymore 🙂
So.. how do you keep your multiple instances of Skype running on Linux?
As Skype 2.1 saved everything to $HOME/.Skype personally I prefer to keep my history so I copied $HOME/.Skype to $HOME/.Skype.profile1 and $HOME/.Skype.profile2
After that you can just start Skype using the following commands:
skype –dbpath=~/.Skype_profile1
skype –dbpath=~/.Skype_profile2
Login and have fun 🙂 It is as easy as that 🙂

Thanks a lot for this advice. It really helped me 🙂 So happy to be able to use 2 skype accounts in parallel. But you have also an idea how to open both profiles without having the need to keep the terminal window open ? Like constructing a link ?
that really depends on which desktop environment (kde/gnome) or distro (ubuntu) you are running on… so the best will be if you google for your distribution name + version + “howto create shortcut”
hope this helps you 🙂
Hi, am using “You are using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS – the Lucid Lynx – released in April 2010 and supported until April 2013.” AND Gnome “Version 2.30.2, Build Date 25.06.10.”.
This should help you then.. hopefully..

It is for a newer version of ubuntu but in the older it should work fine too imho.
hmmm … that doesn’t work for me neither open new skype instance nor change the account. OpenSuSE 11.4 x 64 Gnome 2.32. Where could be the problem ?
What did you type into the terminal? Do the folders exist?
Thank you man! I thought it was not possible to run multiple instances of Skype 4. It is great!
To avoid the same mistake as I made, note that the argument switch (for dbpath) is two hyphens.
is more simple than that, just do: skype –secondary
wow man “skype -secondary” work fine on my ubuntu 12.04
