This is my first entry written from my phone
Works pretty good .. In case you wonder what phone i’m talking about: last week i finally decided it was time for a new phone capable of running qt so know i have a brand new nokia 5800 red edition in my hands with the fullscreen qwertz keyboard activated.. It works.. It is fast, reliable, you can get cool software for it (putty on my mobile phone ) and other cool stuff..
Next step for me is to look into debranding my phone.. After i bougt it i immediately had one available update to the 21 firmware version.. But the recently released 30 firmware just wont update… Even after i’ve changed my product code…
Will come back to you as soon anything new arises or if i find any critical showstoppers for those wanting to by that phone themselves..

The heading says it all.. I’ve finished my summer internship with a stable working version of the program I had to work over…

and today I again got the feeling that many things in C# are looking good at first sight but when you look closer you just begin to think: “WTF”

One example: I wrote a copy constructors because a normal assignment didn’t do a call by value… fine.. it worked for primitive variables.. the byte[] and char[] were resistent.. they thought: “No I STILL want to be a reference” .. so.. Array.Copy .. you need to call a class method to copy a f**** primitive array….

Well.. that was just one of the uglier experiences of mine with C# .. maybe I did something wrong but my C++ skills tell me that everything I did was fine

If someone knows better please correct me

Atm I’m just happy to turn my back to C# for another year.. at least.. hopefully.. I fear that after I’ve finished school I’ll be forced again to develop sthg. in C#… companies using Qt are rare.. and I’ve tried to convince some employees of the company I was at during the internship to use Qt … impossible.. they are just too.. used to C# .. they can’t believe there’s something simpler, they can’t believe there’s something more stable and useful out there.. it’s really really sad.. I’ve tried my best but I failed…

If anyone knows a company using Qt for their daily work who is searching for new employees .. especially after the next year (I suspect December 2010 (civillian/military service)) .. would be REALLY glad about that…

Maybe you’ve been struggling in the past to get scripting into your application? Hard task isn’t it?

NO.. you get pretty good scripting capabilities using the qtscriptgenerator

They expose nearly 100% of the Qt api.. I hear you crying: “BUT THAT’S A SECURITY THREAT!” .. and I fully agree.. so it’s still up to you, to decide what you wanna do… maybe only allowing to use part of the qt modules, maybe just exporting some classes/functions.. it’s up to you to decide, which scripting capabilities you want to offer your developers and how you want to prevent scriptkiddies from taking over your machine

This whole stuff is still really new to me so forgive me if I told ya complete bull**** ^^

I’m also looking forward to the kdevelop bindingsgenerator getting ripped out and ported to be useful for normal bindings.. reason for this is that as far as I’ve heard recently the qtscriptgenerator is pretty out of date technologywise and the kdevelop bindingsgenerator is much better from the technical pov..

Hope we’ll be looking into a bright scripting future.. the possibilities are just too cute to resist

Cause I’ve finished my work in my internship shortly before the end of the first half and my mentor is at vacation I have some spare time to do all the silly stuff I would never have taken time for if I were at home

One example: atm I’m trying to port khotnewstuff to Qt only (meaning that I try to rip out all not working/useless functions from khotnewstuff and fetch all dependencies from the underlying libs (kdelibs)… believe me.. that is a hell of a task..

My first approach was porting the whole thing at once, just dragging in all the dependencies it needed (which left me at about 80 classes with kio not even completely ported )

So my current approach is getting rid of all methods not needed, combining some classes, and trying to port each part one by one.. Currently I’m fighting with KArchive .. got rid of all compile errors.. though linker errors remain.. some of them may be related to the underlying platform (Windows – forced to use that at work ) but even if that’s the case.. I need to get it working on Windows..

You may wonder why I try to achieve this? Fun? Laziness of writing my own system? Those are all valid reasons but my biggest reason was that I want to integrate this thingy with Dinjam (the scriptable datamodeller we will be working on next year)

I think I’ll dedicate another post to Dinjam and it’s design *me wants to start hacking*

Wohooo!! Finally it’s holiday time After a year full of work, after much blood sweat it’s a real relief to now start into a short 2 days vacation
Wondering why just 2 days? On monday I’m starting my summer internship – lasting 1 month, and afterwards I’m taking my drivers course to reach my goal of driving a vehicle some time soon

So.. what’s going on beside this real life stuff?

Many ideas, many things flooding through my head – ranging from projects to a special person… will be an interesting time coming…

Allevo is finished – beside of bugfixes and all sorts of removed features for release … time was just too short measured …
Sabayon Control Center is virtually dead – no talking, no time, no anything

Had an idea about a new approach to webbrowser/tabbed browsing – maybe I’ll further ellaborate… created a very BASIC mockup… time will tell if someone’s interested in taking a look.

Dinjam the datamodeller was cut down so we don’t make the same failures as with Allevo – it was just TOO MUCH – so it’s now just a modeller for economic processes (used quite often at my school) .. although it still has it’s plugin mechanism so it will be extend able to UML and entity relationshipo diagrams

My diploma project just got running.. all contracts signed SVN repository is accessable and waiting for some concepts, code and docu

Yeah.. that was pretty much it ^^ many things changed, too much for one blog entry… still have to convince myself to further explain my weird life to the public

Yeah.. as the title says: Today I had my first driving lesson with my father.. man.. I never imagined it would be such a difficult thing.. difficult in the sense of: “needs-lots-of-practice-and-fine-tuning* .. well.. still I was already in the 2nd gear today .. not too bad for my first lesson… when I compare with others who seem to had their first pratice lesson I actually did pretty good

On a sidenote I finally seem to have found a project with an ISP for my degree dissertation next year *weeeh*

Really looking forward to code threads in C and going back to some more lower level stuff than Qt

Also my TODO list for school (homeworks, …) is nearly empty atm *wohoo*

wonder what I shall do with the time.. no I won’t have troubles finding something to do.. allevo (I & II), systemcenter, sabayon linux control center, a datamodeller (only conceptual atm), going through some C/C++ books, a book about electronic basics, multiple column kickoff for KDE4, KDE 4 coding itself and much other stuff that has already slipped my mind

and beside of those items from my brain-todo-list there’s also school (sometimes ^^)

Yeah.. the headline tells it all ^^ The helpbrowser I’m currently writing for Allevo using QtWebkit actually passes the ACID3 test (100%, a bit laggy and linktest failure… but overall: IT’S 100% )

Today seems to be my lucky day Back in September iirc I applied for a testing account for Suse Studio.. never got an answer.. today it arrived — I’m in *yeaha*

First I’ve got to say: THANKS

Second: it’s just awesome.. first thing I did was reproduce my currently installed system.. worked fine, branded it with different wallpapers, started it up in browser (!!!) through the Java client.. worked fine

Second: built myself an KDE trunk compile virtual machine.. currently building.. looking forward to my Gtk+ free system ready for compiling KDE on windows (at least in a VM ^^). Completely set up with my bashrc, packages I need for trunk and such stuff.. as soon as compilation progress is finished I’ll start it up in browser, download KDE trunk and than save the image again.. ready to compile houston ^^

My class and of course myself will travel to the Hochkar “mountain” by bus and we’ll have a beautiful ski day .. in theory ^^ … weather for tomorrow is said to be.. let’s say ugly ^^ and snowslide alert is still at the highest possible level (they could slip without any external influence).. well.. we’ll see.. the only thing I know is that I want to go skiing again and that it’s my last chance this year ….

I’m going to present you my first try (and hopefully last) on an essay about Operating Systems. It’s been created under pretty much pressure but I still think it’s a pretty good overview about that big topic…

What I dislike about the fact, me creating the presentation, is that I’ll have to give a speech about it tomorrow… one hour standing in front of a (half)asleep class talking about an interesting topic nobody else of the class is interested in

… and it’s sooo early in the morning …. still… can’t change it.. or can I?

So that you know… the presentation and the essay are in german (my mother tongue).. have fun if you’ve got the language skills to read it .. and no … I don’t think I’ll translate it to english

What have I realized? I’ve blogged WAY too few lately Sorry about that… didn’t have much time.. still hasn’t changed but I’ll try to blog more often from now on… maybe I can find the time to do so in some boring lessons at school :p

Any news from my front? Think so:

The accounting suite Allevo is progressing really nicely (although I’ve stalled with hacking a bit the last days.. but the others of the group are still working nicely ).

I’ve promised myself to spend some more time with Sabayon Control Center. I really hope I won’t disappoint myself

Yesterday I tried to compile Systemcenter again on Windows Vista x64 and on openSUSE 11.1 x64. Was a bit interesting.. to say the least… On Windows I had to fix compile errors first (missing header files for some weird Windows API Calls… I HATE THE WINDOWS API ) .. and on Linux many things didn’t work anymore.. although I can’t remember if it’s because I’m in the middle of restructuring or because the Linux /proc tree  changed so much in the last kernel versions… hope I’ll have some time to fix those things.

What I’d also like to try is to create a port of Systemcenter to KDE4. Maybe even rewrite it so that it fits in with Powerdevil and the Battery Plasmoid.. Would like to monitor the CPU frequency, CPU temperature and such stuff there…

But that’s all for the future… now it’s now

What have I done today? I’ve recompiled KDE 4.3 trunk… Looking great, working great if it wouldn’t destroy my plasma-desktop (no error.. it has changed ) config every now and than… could be because of the recompiles or .. don’t know.. if you know the cause please write me a comment ^^

One thing I still miss under KDE 4.3 compared to Windows is the speedy Explorer. Yeah dolphin and konqueror are pretty fast in general… but with larger folders it’s just lagging sooo much behind.. even selection of items takes a while And the even sader thing is: On windows dolphin works faster… but still not as fast as the Windows Explorer.. so something in Linux (kernel??) or the graphics drivers are to blame I think.. correct me if I’m wrong (yes I’ve disabled all file previews)…

Another thing which I’ve heard quite a bit lately is PlasMate. The IDE for plasmoid/applet/whatever_you_call_it writing. Afaics nothing works at the moment beside of the UI but that looks already pretty promising if you’ve got some imagination. Well.. nothing sounds a bit hard.. you get a start screen to choose what project type you want, creating a project works, you get a tree with possible files, you have a bar at the left side of the screen for changing between code, documentation, publishing and such stuff.. looks pretty interesting … like QtCreator

QtCreator and KDevelop.. two giants battling each other.. well sort of.. they’ve got different purposes each has it’s ups and downs.. personally I like the clean design of QtCreator.. but KDevelop feels much more powerful.. if it wouldn’t crash on me every now and than… also shortcuts don’t work for me… Code Completion (Ctrl + Space) opens up a dialog that that command is ambiguous… yeah.. tells me much ^^ I’ve looked into the “Configure shortcuts” dialog.. Ctrl + Shift + Space… does nothing.. interesting… so command completion doesn’t work atm… too bad … can’t live without it anymore… also the UI file integration for Qt crashed on me and I’m missing Qt Help integration… time will tell how it evolves… but it looks promising.

So… that was enough writing for the moment.. got other things to write for school and projects… ah.. just remembered myself of my LONG todo…

So.. what happened since my last blog post?

Everything and nothing.. school goes on and on.. nothing interesting about that fact ^^ Qt 4.5 Beta and Qt Creator Beta have been released *yay*, openSUSE 11.1 recently hit gold, Allevo has been split in 2 applications (one for costcalculation and one for double book keeping), KDE4.2 trunk rocks and SabayonLinux will release it’s 4.0 release in just about a few hours *still waiting*

In other news: I’m searching for a storage solution for my data.. I’ve got 2 possible solutions.. one would be a NAS..  but they are horribly slow .. the harddrives I have choosen are capable of up to 120MB/s read performance… the best NAS for an affordable price just comes up with around 20MB/s …. wasting so much performance and still having to pay ~400€ doesn’t sound like a sane solution for me..

The  other solution would be a (not so) small server… I thought about a Intel Atom Single/Dualcore with  a RAID Controller… the RAID Controller is the problem.. I just don’t know what to take.. a pure software solution? hybrid? hardware? those are listed ascending according to the price… for a hardware solution (e.g. from 3ware or HighPoint) I’d have to pay ~150€ …. the hybrid solution would be an onboard Intel ICH100R .. it even sometimes outperforms the RAID controller cards… but it’s also dependent on the Operating System… don’t know if I can trust such a solution…also the Intel Atom wouldn’t be a solution anymore then.. would have to take something different.. desktop components which have a much higher power consumption….

I simply don’t know which one to take .. so please help me if you’ve got any experience with those .. maximum price for the whole server solution would be ~500€ (200€ for the two 1TB Harddrives from Seagate)

Again you’ve heard nothing from me for a long time.. sry about that.. but: I’ve got some “news” for you ^^

Lately I’ve been doing a bit of distro hopping (still doing) cause there’s a new round of releases coming ^^

I started with Fedora 10 Beta Gnome Live CD. Started, looked fine at first glance, installed.. hm.. k.. what can I actually do with it? PackageKit integration looks good although it still has some rough edges (don’t remember what exactly but well.. it’s still beta) .. But still.. it’s a good idea.. gnome looks pretty good although I feel like I can’t do anything with it.. well.. I’m a KDE guy and I think that won’t change. What really bugged me was that I couldn’t install the NVIDIA driver… I tried searching the settings menu of gnome (where also installing software, … is located) .. nothing there.. so I searched in the packagekit frontend.. nothing.. manual install.. can’t start up X anymore.. something with libGl.. I found a faq stating how to install the NVDIAI drivers on fedora 9.. but well.. I thought: that can’t be sooo complex.. much easier on other distributions.. so I kicked fedora with the conclusion that I dislike the policy of only free components and making the life of those having proprietary components harder.
Note about the technique: kernel based mode settings!! nice one.. but not available on nvidia … so I just had three progressbars (overlapping) in a text mode fashion running from the left to the right of the screen…

Next one was Ubuntu 8.10 Beta.. not much has changed since the last release (minor improvements all over.. but nice).. the installer offered me to import settings from all of my operating systems (xp, vista, sabayon linux) — REALLY NICE! Boot up is lighting fast, the default wallpaper was a ugly brown one (who would have thought that ^^) with wrong color depth (at least looked like that), after installation I tried to get my NVIDIA drivers.. worked without a flaw through the hardware drivers menu… perfect.. it even offered me two options (stable (173. 14 iirc) and one of the latest beta drivers.. I think 177.78) ..
What was also nice is the gnome networkmanager applet.. seemed to work without any flaws for me (beeing connected to lan and wlan at the same time.. don’t know which 0.7 version they are using). What drove me away from Ubuntu was that it has by far less packages than openSUSE’s buildservice and that I don’t like sudo in general (I know I could create a real root account, but gksudo still asks me for my user password), as well as other minor things which annoy me in the long run. And of course: there were still some new distros out there I haven’t tried ^^

Next on my plan was openSUSE 11.1 Beta 2. Well.. what shall I say? It has still the old artwork (that will change), the KDE integration isn’t really good yet (the first thing which annoyed me when I started the KDE4 livecd was that the “show dashboard” icon was corrupted).. Another big annoyancde was that the resolution I chose in grub (1280×1024) wasn’t stretching the whole screen but staying in the middle of the screen and leaving black bars and all sides nothing seems to have visible changed since 11.0.. I know of the new partitioner module in yast and some other little improvements but compared to other distributions the progress looks pretty slow.. but here is also valid: it’s still beta.. and of course: I’ve filed bug reports (screen resolution and graphical glitches)

The last one (from which I’m actually writing atm) is Mandriva One 2009 KDE4. I have one thing to say: WOW! It has the wow effect microsoft promised for vista if you ask me ^^ The KDE 4.1.2 integration is near perfect. I have a little battery icon in the taskbar which is actually a standalone app (when you open it (right click — configure powersave)).. never saw that in other distros, mandriva control center looks pretty good again (redesigned), Mandriva has created their own startmenu (they’ve ported the look and feel of their menu from KDE3).. What I think is really nice is: I totally forgot that I’m running KDE4.. I thought it’s KDE3.. which actually means: WE ARE THERE! You can make KDE4 look and feel like KDE3.. What’s missing a bit is panel (auto) hiding and some other backports from KDE 4.2 (panel) but well.. the default configuration is just great and doesn’t eat too much space (as big as the gnome task bar). And the best thing is: it feels blazing fast!!! I have only tried KDE4 compiled in debug mode until know .. but compiled in release and with (possible) optimisations from the mandriva team it kicks ass
What is a bit annoying is the systray which has sometimes a wrong background (know KDE upstream issue — will be adressed in 4.2 afaik), a few (5 until know (~6 hrs runtime)) lags (pc stops responding for 2 or 3 seconds).

The point which may drive me away from Mandriva 2009 is their package management. It’s just awful if you ask me… I tried installing lamp through package management (plus point: it’s the first distribution I know which has a meta package for lamp).. conflict, chose the wrong solution — had to restart the package management otherwise I wasn’t able to change my selection.. it installed fine.. phpmyadmin asks for a password.. will have to investigate on where to find it ^^
Another thing which bugs me is that I can’t find opera in the repos (I have enabled all non-oss, backports, testing, ..) .. maybe there where more repos for mandriva.. but I can’t remember them.. I can just remember the depenency hell from the last time I tried mandriva (2007) ..
On a sidenote: the nvidia drivers were automatically installed because I used the one live cd .. nice!
Edit: btw: I’ve NEVER seen firefox 3.02 start up soooo fast!! it’s absolutely amazing (the whole speed of the system.. boot is just a bit slower than ubuntu (subjectiv))

So.. that was it for now.. my hands are already hurting.. was programming half day long and know writing such a big entry ^^

Sorry for the VEEERY long time since my last entry… I was soo busy with school For example yesterday I had a presentation about a tv duell between two of our politicans… it’s election campaign time atm in austria … I HATE IT! All of the politicans are making promises they won’t keep.. Me and 2 of my friends had to do the presentation in about a day… was a pretty hard time for us.. now we can’t see anything about politics anymore or we’ll explode ^^ .. well.. tomorrow is election day .. so I hope it has an end then for some years again..

On other news: SabayonControlCenter is (slowly) progressing .. the QtMainApp now shows the modules and can actually launch something (StandAloneModules) .. Allevo had nearly no progress.. a crash fix.. but I currently have no time for nothing…

Hope I’ll get some work (and blogging) done next week.. but it doesn’t look promising… another 2 presentations and 3 projects ..

Really long time since the last time I blogged.. so.. school started.. and it’s like every year.. you go to school.. sit there. wait for it to pass by.. but it’s different then in the last years: WE’VE GOT NO INTERNET!!

Due to the resettlement of our school because of reconstruction of my old school we’ve gone to a new building with virtually no infastructure.. even no water in the class .. yet. We are getting a bigger and better class room next week *hell yes*

Most of the subjects now are also more interesting simply because they are more praxis oriented and with much more projects in teamwork.

So it happened that in a subject called “Project development” we were searching for a project we could do.. after some time one of us 6 guys said: “Maybe we could extend Allevo” and with these words a new era has begun

We are now 6 guys who will improve and extend Allevo on every possible side.

On another note: on saturday my dancing course starts again and I still don’t know if I’ll subscribe because my dancing partner still hasn’t agreed on going again this year *beeing sad*

As you may have seen this is more or less a braindump .. another note:my new school is now in the heart of vienna which also means that my daily lunch at restaurants like I had it with some friends during the last year is getting REALLY expensive ^^

Yeah.. so .. that was more or less what happend during the last 1 1/2 weeks ^^

So.. the new year started.. and what has it got for me and my classmates? A pretty competent class teacher, a classroom which is smaller and uglier than the last room for a higher number of students! (29 )

Also the school has no money anymore so they can’t afford things like paper for their teachers to make some copies.. it’s a pity…. We now also have to buy our own WLAN access point for class.. and basically do everything we want ourselves .. and the more important point: pay for everything ourselves.. we’ll see how that turns out..

Also I got some time to hack away at Sabayon Control Center.. finally I won the fight with CMake and have a working rcc, uic and moc .. so the Qt GUI works.. the next problem is now the dynamic loading of the ModuleManager library.. will look into it further tomorrow cause today I got no nerves anymore for dlopen, void pointers etc.

So. another year.. another chance for beeing a good student :p

or from ugly to uglier.. don’t know enough words to express my feelings about my new school…

The last 2 years I’ll have to complete until my graduation will be in an really old building, looking uglier than the one before.. and that’s really hard cause the old one was an abandoned police station… it has also been used by students for decades (like 250 years).. it has holes in the wall, everything is dirty and the eletrical installation looks a bit like.. well.. horror ^^

and it doesn’t get better with the new one.. looks just as ugly.. if not more.. well.. think I stop bashing… my english isn’t good enough to tell you how bad the state of those schools are

So I’ll just talk about cmake.. Today I tried to compile some piece of code which should end up as part of the Sabayon Control Center (specifially the Qt Main Window).. no success.. can’t get cmake to create the appropriate files (call moc to do this).. also I wasn’t able to find >>ANY<< documentation about Qt + Cmake integration.. the only side (qtnode) is down for mainteance .. sine at least 1 1/2 weeks.. I have absolutely no idea how I should get on with my work without knowing how to handle the Qt specific stuff in cmake…

Also the Gtk + cmake integration will be interesting..

I really hope that cmake was the right decision and that we just aren’t familiar enough with it yet.

On a sidenote: bought a new USB Stick and a DVB-T stick today.. the USB Stick is a Corsair FlashVoyager with 8GB! 25€ … not bad ^^ the DVB-T stick is a Hauppauge WinTV Nova T .. also works on linux (after compiling the v4l modules (if you need a howto .. just ask ^^))

The last two days I tried to get a mediacenter running on an old pc.. think I was successfull with MediaPortal (windows only *grr*) .. works with TV (recording, timeshift), server for image/videos/music store.. although it’s a bit slow on the UI

So.. that’s it for today (speaking of the day which ended 1:10h before already^^)

Long time nothing from me…
I just wanted to express my anger about eclipse.. maybe I’m just too dumb for it…

On windows:
Updates won’t work as they should (update/install procedure of new features stopped many times until I gave up).. here’s a funny message I got:

ehm… yeh.. think it explains itself… I LOVE messages which tell so much

On openSUSE 11.0:

I installed eclipse from the standard repository (version 3.3) .. don’t ask me why they’ve still got 3.3 in the repo.. so I wanted to install the Qt Integration.. doesn’t show up.. I nearly tried every directory… won’t work…

So I upgraded to Eclipse 3.4 through a Buildservice Repo from a user.. started.. works.. still don’t see the Qt extensions…seems to be hopeless..  so I wanted to see if I can get the other thing to work (like subversion integration, cmake highligthing, etc.)…. failure.. update function doesn’t work (doesn’t even start.. just gives me an error message that it isn’t available)

Think I’ll stick with vim/kate/notepad++ for now.. although I have to say that eclipse is now useable from terms of speed on my new notebook.. on my old one it took 4 MINUTES to start!

Think I’ve bashed enough for today … school starts soon (5 days)… hope I’ll still have the time for my projects..

Spent some time hacking on Allevo and SabayonControlCenter today.. although I still didn’t got to working on the UIBuilder.

So.. the Amarok team has just released the first beta of Amarok 2.0

So far I was just able to test it on Windows.. and I must say that I’m deeply impressed. It worked out of the box (installed via kde-windows-installer). It played music from the various internet streams, the cool on screen mouse menu (don’t know how it’s called ^^) works without any problems (and is really intuitiv).

Before I keep talking I’d recommend everyone to test it out on their machines.. AND: don’t forget to file bugreports

One thing I’d like to have seen is a mac build..I want to show my brother that opensource products can rule the world

Some posts ago I told ya that I’ll post pics of my new notebook… well.. today I’ve transfered them from my only cam …. a handycam (nokia 6300, 2MP) to my pc… they look AWFUL! … I won’t post them until you really ask me to… you can actually see that it’s a notebook and it’s connectors and so forth .. but the quality is beyond good and evil ^^

In other news I made some progress in Allevo’s settings dialog.. although now I have to fight with references in C++…. pretty long since I had to do that the last time… can’t remember exactly how I have to write the code that it works.. well.. I’ll see ^^

Also I’ve started work on another project… “Imagine” .. it’s based on an idea from my brother… an Photo manager with tagging (person tagging), sorting, renaming, slideshow, metainformation and much more capabilities… I’ll blog more about it later … it’s now much too late today (or tomorrow.. put it how you like it)

I’ve also discussed a bit about Sabayon Control Center with sjieke, one member of our team.. will be an interesting challenge.. and I’ve now seen for the first time that I have much to learn… today I was confronted with design patterns.. never heard of them before… but they seam to be a “cool” thing ^^

So I think I’ll go and get some sleep before my head crashes with the keyboard

Today I’ve turned 17 I think I’ve made the biggest presents myself… the new notebook and finally:
Systemcenter and Allevo compile again :p

Nah.. to be serious.. the presents I got were great and I’m really happy that my family is celebrating with me

Now I’m waiting for the congratulations of exactly one person.. I really miss her … well.. it’s early in the morning.. so let’s see when she wakes up ^^

I just made an imo unbelieveable discovery… compiling qt (with nearly all compile switches enabled):

old notebook: 2:10h (iirc)

new notebook: 18 MINUTES!!!!!!!

I still can’t believe it will see how long compiling KDE takes

I’m really frustrated atm.. I’m trying to migrate all my data from my old notebook to my new one… well.. I’m still TRYING….

I’ve got some files with some ******* long and extraordinary characters so that windows can’t copy them

I’ve also tried with linux but it coun’t create the folders.. I’m a bit lost atm what to do.. I’m trying to remove all the files with these crazy filenames but it takes time to find them using the crappy windows copying tool -.-

Edit: Ah.. good old linux Can someone tell me why I haven’t thought about this before

For those who don’t know: this lists all files with unknown characters (which make problems under windows) of the current directory… now you can easily deal with them (unix/linux can handle them )

So.. long time you heard nothing from me.. so here’s a status update

I’ve got my hands on my brand new notebook It’s absolutely cool

I’ll post pics as soon as I can. Already tested and tortured it to stresstest it ^^

Atm I’ve installed thes OS’ses:

• Windows XP SP3 x86
• Windows Vista SP1 x64 (well sometimes you need to game too ^^)
• Sabayon Linux 3.5 x86
• openSUSE 11.0 x64

They seem to work really well on this hardware.. although the only things I find really annoying on this notebook are the lack of a real scrollarea on the touchpad (you can scroll with the fingerprint reader!!!) and the really long startup of the bios (and the bios is empty..the only thing you can do with it is set the time!!!)

Well.. that was it so far.. need to get back to setting up all systems ^^
