Again some time has gone by since my last blog =( sadly I didn’t have much time lately to blog so I’ll just give you an update on what I was doing today.

I updated my 6 month old Arch Linux installation on my old notebook to the current testing (running testing before). I started yaourt -Syu and it ran through without any hickups, rebootet and I had a fully working system on bleeding edge technology again… now THAT is what I call seamless rolling release distro

I’m also using Arch Linux on my current notebook which I regulary keep up2date which works also great =) and my buildserver is also running Arch Linux but not testing and it is also working really reliabe =)

I just love Arch Linux!

Although I’m really curious about other current distros like Fedora 15 or openSUSE 11.4 or even Ubuntu… each has their own great strenghts but I still think I’ll always come back to Arch

Just wanted to save this information somewhere in the hope of it being useful to someone sometime

If you have no sound after boot and increasing volume doesn’t work it is likely pulseaudio failed to start. Some minutes after boot it is possible to start pulseaudio via terminal (as root) (

start pulseaudio

) but if you forget you end up with no sound which is I’d say pretty bad for a phone… -.-

So what do you have to do?

Execute this command as root:

cp /opt/maemo/usr/lib/libFLAC.so.8.2.0 /usr/lib/libFLAC.so.8.2.0

What causes the problem seems to be that pulseaudio wants to start when /opt is not mounted yet and libFLAC seems to have been (accidently) moved to /opt when it should have stayed out…

I do not guarantee it works but at least for me (and some guys on tmo) it worked

I recently found out about the buildservice plugin (OBS, Meego) for Qt Creator (branch: buildservice). I wanted to give it a try and sadly I had to compile an old instance of QtCreator as it was based on an old version of QtCreator.

Therefore I just patched it to work with current master of QtCreator.

You can find the patch here. (okay I actually wrote this article 5 days ago but I had to overcome some hurdles to setup my server… -.-)

I’ll lo0k into contacting the project Bretzn developers to rebase their repo onto the current master of QtCreator. Will report back if they plan to do it soon

PS: this patch should apply cleanly to qtcreator master – it is only a small diff compared to the buildservice branch (I think only one cpp file changed (changed a list to a custom class as an interface in QtCreator changed))

You already read the title of this post (or you probably wouldn’t have read the post) so you probably… maaaybe are already going to know what I’m writing about.

THIS – will hopefully grow into a full blown navigation solution. They are working on POI showing/hiding (including different categories), voice navigation with nokia provided speech files and automatic language detection – as well as reading out street names using espeak or other solutions. And what is also on their TODO is offline routing support =)

Sounds great doesn’t it? The project is still pretty early – and I don’t think it will help OVI maps get faster on N900 but it for sure will help boost its features =) For those not knowing: OVI Maps is based on HTML/JS! So they are just editing one single index.html which originally was about 800KB and is now already up at 1.2MB.

Tracking the GPS position and automatically following the map already works but I couldn’t get speech to work. Also it has problems with loosing GPS connectivity (e.g. in tunnels) or if you choose another route (no automatic route recalculation yet).

Still it is REALLY great someone is working on this On the other hand it is really sad that some volunteers who are not even programmers succeed at something Nokia failed to do for quite some time…. I hate business…

How to install (as of 23.1.2011)

Just a short one this time… I was browsing the internet looking up some news about maemo when I found a document describing the requirements for submitting a package to the Ovi Store. It was a pdf file and I clicked on “Download” in firefox – it suggested to open the document with $some_application… didn’t look at it… I read the document – and pressed the middle mouse button and held it to drag the page down… When I suddenly realized: when did Okular get this functionality? oO

I looked up into the menubar – opened the Help menu – pressed info – to suddenly realize Firefox had opened Evince instead of Okular. The style perfectly matches those of my kde programs =) So THANKS to all oxygen-gtk contributors!

For those not knowing: oxygen-gtk is a native implementation of the oxygen style with a new gtk style engine. Its goal is to create a style perfectly the same as the KDE one – and to also use its settings.

Works great for Firefox, Thunderbird, and it seems like all other programs are doing good as well =) … only vuze seems to have problems (crash)

For ArchLinux there are some pkgbuilds in AUR available as well as the 1.0 release (don’t know how old it is already) in the repositories.

It is late already, I have to go to work tomorrow… today… so this will be a short status update. Today I had enough motivation to work on the Qml frontend of Dinjam again and it shows off with SOME results

We can load scripts and they can actually do something. So this Dialog (with the white area in it) is actually a QGraphicsView subclass created by the Base script (the same script used in the desktop version) YAY

So that’s it for now =) Hopefully I can soon continue working on it…

Just a short update on the current status of Dinjam. I didn’t have much time recently but still there was some progress. First of all I want to welcome back Peter, a member of the original Dinjam team – he recently joined back by contributing 2 patches to the build system. Thanks.

Hopefully there is much more to come

On another note I invested some time into fixing the Scriptmanager interaction as well as Document interaction across library and the frontends. The functionality is still not 100% (I think) and it is pretty hackish/not yet cleaned up – but it is working initially – maybe not yet as good as master but we are getting there

What is often forgot by opensource projects is their homepage. I try not make the typical mistakes and create a easy to keep up2date site early on. Therefore I’m in the process of setting up joomla on Sourceforge (see dinjams project page).

As I’m pretty busy now with work and private stuff atm but I still want to stay up2date with current ongoing topics in the free software world I was looking for the videos of the (not so) recent Meego Conference 2010. After some searching I found them on the linuxfoundation homepage.

Sadly you would have to click through all of them and there was no possibility to download all of them at once (at least I didn’t find any).

So I searched the server and found a xml file containing all filenames. I quickly downloaded that, parsed it and now we’ve got the file lists which you can feed into DownThemAll or some other download client.

What else does it contain? Updated Qt, Qt-mobility… though I can not yet confirm that dualbooting Meego has become easier… we’ll see…

For the moment I’m busy reinstalling/reconfiguring all my programs as I had to do a update via Nokia PC Suite which erased all my programs (as I had not enough space on root…)

PS: no OVI maps hasn’t received any visible updates =(

PPS: PR 1.3 now supports syncing with OVI Suite (not tested yet)

Also stated in the comments on conversations.nokia.com is that Orbit Ui (Ui Extensions for mobile) (Uiemo) has been discontinued in favour of native Qt and Qt Quick.

I don’t know what to think about this yet but at least there are not two competing Frameworks for Ui development anymore (Meego Touch Framework and Orbit).

There are 4 different uis in the works – even though I’m not sure all of them will ever be finished (more about that later).

1.) Desktop (QWidget based)

This is the traditional Ui as it has always been with the Ui designed using Qt Designer and the QGraphicsScene created from within the scripts.

Atm Scripts are broken in the sense of that there are no C++ exports of for example documentmanagement. (and there are some other broken pieces everywhere)

2.) Meego Touch Framework (MTF) (QGraphicsView based)

A new ui based on the MTF developed by Nokia/Intel for Meego. Atm I’m trying to setup a devel environment but it is not as easy as I had hoped – I’m trying the qemugl approach from the wiki – but the image won’t boot using kvm (just stops at loading the kernel) and without it starts X and then stops (no handset UX shows up). How to get network up and running can be found here.

After packaging libmeegotouch and meegotouchtheme for ArchLinux I can now sort of execute/link/use meego applications although there is some really weird gconf stuff going on and I’m not sure if my system is correctly set up now. Maybe I’ve got to set up a Fedora VM or something similar. Or just wait for PR 1.3 of Maemo to easily dualboot Meego natively on my N900 to execute directly on my N900.

Basically everything here are placeholders – as I just recently found out that meego applications run at all (before I had a white square and nothing else appearing).

3.) QML Ui (QDeclarativeView based)

QML or “Qt Quick” how the cool guys at Nokia are calling it seems to be the future Nokia envisions for app development. Combined with their ongoing lab project QSceneGraph which should bring enormous performance gains as all painting will shift from QPainter to OpenGL/on GPU based painting, this may really be the future – at least in the long run. I must admit that the whole affair is really new stuff to me so I’m having a pretty hard time figuring out how to transform a traditional ui into a QML based version.

I’m currently trying basic things like navigating between a basic menu to another page showing an about dialog – and I want to make that happen using a nice transition – and not showing/hiding elements but instead loading them as I need them (to save ressources). Sadly I wasn’t able to find any QML application out there using such an approach… I’m looking for the pages concept of MTF I think…

Anyway… here’s my first try…

So what works? The quit button – and About switches to another page – but atm without a nice sliding transition effect and using show/hide of the different rectangles… not nice imho.

4.) Qt Components (QML based)

The last frontend Dinjam may provide in the future is the Qt Components based one – although atm there isn’t much progress as Qt Components itself are not really anywhere atm. Afaik there exists some sort of a Meego “style” atm and an incomplete MX “style”, with a plasma (KDE) “style” in the working (see this post on plasma-devel mailing list) but there is not really anything useable atm I could plug into. At least to my knowledge.

So what is still left to do? A LOT! It starts out with library recompiles as soon as I switch platform (3 object files want to relink again), cmake fixes to incorporate the possibility to build not only one but many/all platforms at once. And of course: finish those uis.

I think the best step would be to first get the desktop ui working again and then slowly start creating the others. It remains to be seen how to integrate a QGraphicsScene/View with MTF/QML. Interesting times ahead… that’s for sure.

Back again with a short entry about my WD TV Live and how it can be enhanced using an alternative firmware.

I’ve switched to use WDLXTV because I wanted to be able to watch youtube in HD and without any restrictions on which videos I’m allowed to watch. Another interesting service I’ve learned to love is pandorafm.

Sadly I wasn’t able to get WDLXTV to work with my server at home (openSUSE 11.3) – it was shown but I wasn’t able to access its samba shares (login credentials weren’t accepted). The thread on forum.wdlxtv.com can be found here

The solution in the end was that I had to use

config_tool -c SMB_RESOLVEORDER='lmhosts wins bcast'

Now I’m waiting for the new firmware from WD which supports DVD menus (beta already released) and the adoption by WDLXTV to base its firmware on that one.

All in all it is one of the best investions I’ve ever made in entertainment stuff – it just works for most things – except some strange wmv or flv (flash isn’t supported really well)….

PS: having ssh access and hacking all your devices is FUN

PR 1.3 for N900 is finally coming =) and according to Nokia staff not too far away

Also Meego on N900 is progressing quite nicely even though it won’t be really useable with its 1.1 release at the end of October…

So today I’ve got an update about firefox-qt for you I finally had the time and energy to fix those ArchLinux PKGBUILDs I had lying around on my disk…

We’ve now got one single pkgbuild to install using yaourt -S firefox-qt-hg
No need to uninstall firefox/xulrunner anymore.

The only thing I would recommend you to do is:

BACKUP YOUR PROFILE!!

or even better: change the path to your profile (in /home/$user/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini change the path and create the folder before starting firefox-qt-hg

I’ve written down a summary of what is working here. Feel free to extend it We could create a nice changelog imho and track the progress of Firefox-Qt for users

So as you can see the Firefox-Qt port is progressing quite nicely – even if there is still a long road to go – I think the mobile effort helps the Qt port a lot.. (firefox-mobile for Meego is Qt based)

Today I’ve got a short review of Mobile Maps 10 on Maemo for you.

These are my experiences with the latest App Version of 8.1.1

Pros:

• navigation seems to work good
• interface is pretty snappy and logical

Cons:

• sometimes very crashy (although this got a lot better after upgrading from 8.1.0 to 8.1.1) – PLEASE fix those crashes…
• clicking POI isn’t possible when navigating (and showing the steps of the route)
• there doesn’t seem to be a “walk” mode
• exit button is on the second page of the menu – bit annoying when trying to exit
• no traffic information in Austria
• as soon as the maps are open it is impossible to use any other app which needs a keyboard as Mobile Maps catches the keyboard focus – so no texting/email writing/… while navigating…
• pretty expensive… 69,99€

Overall it still looks like a good navigation software…  hopefully my opinion will stay that way as I keep on using the software those are experiences from ~2 days…

• Wayland may first come to Meego and replace X.org which imho should result in a cleaner stack and maybe fewer dependencies/bloat *me looks forward to Qt on Wayland*
• D-Bus kernel implementation resulting in massive speedups in some areas and all this demoed on Maemo – so I see the possibility to this getting into Meego too?

Meego keeps getting more exciting
Edit: of course there’s also systemd which is also being looked at integration into Meego

I’m just not sure now if I should buy Sygic Mobile Maps 10 or wait until Ovi maps is ready… which might never happen…

What this does mean though is that Ovi Maps will come to Meego – which is good news imho – at least that sounds like Ovi maps will be available on the open source version of Meego – not only the Harmattan release and future Nokia products…

Just a short status update on some infos/vids/… that I recently found on the web:

• There’s a possibility of  a PR 1.3 for Maemo (see: maemo forum)
• Ovi Maps 3.06 Beta has been released and features some nice things – but it still does not support the N900 -.-
• Meego seems to be progressing quite nicely – at least it seems to work MUCH better than the snapshots I tried two or three weeks ago: see this vid (chinese sound)
• the Nokia N8 and the E7 look REALLY good – even if they are Symbian – but Symbian ^3 is already a BIG step forward in comparison to Symbian ^1 as shipped with the Nokia 5800 – and it of course features all those nice things which other platforms (maemo) are still lacking – like full PC Suite support, …

That’s about it from the technical side… Beside of that there were some interesting private developments but those are to be asked in private

Dinjam is going to get a revival as a mobile app for maemo or meego (have I mentioned that before?). I’m planning to do that using a library and mulitple frontends.

One of the frontends planned is a Qml frontend using Qt Quick Components. Another one is a native libmeegotouch UI. And of course the already existing frontend using traditional QWidgets.

Currently everything is in a broken state – and can be found in my mobileui branch on gitorious.

The current status is that CMake migration is in the progress… the library is already created but I’m not sure yet if I need some export macros? or how I should handle include paths… I also need to figure out what has to be cleaned up from the desktop (widget based) ui into the library and how I can strip down those components…

Next will be that I’ve gotta figure out how I can use the QGraphicsView in Qml OR how I can paint from within QtScript onto the Qml Scene… I would like to be able to animate the View (roll it to the side like a paper or something like that …)

So if anyone has got any idea on how to do this I would really appreciate it

Maybe you are asking yourself what has kept me busy and why it took so long for those small looking steps… well life… and cmake… this grandious build system had something against my complex folder structure… yeah… until I found out how to use it the right way(tm)…. did you know that CMake had an include statement? using it you can include other CMakeLists and therefore you can set variables in a subdir and still use this variable in the topdir where you included the list… who needs add_subdirectory if you can use include? cool thing…

I found that solution through the help of a german qt forum thanks. so for all my german readers (are there any? oO): here you can find the thread.

Today I’ve got something different for you… a short anecdote of my life

Soo… today a veeeery long lasting crush… or the love of my life… at least it felt like that… ended… well something can’t end without being started… everything started over one year ago… sadly I was too blind to see that she didn’t felt the same… or I was just too dumb not wanting to realize it, ignoring all the signs… blind of love… well… today everything ended… and I had felt that it had to end either way for a looooong time… because I knew that I couldn’t live on like that… well I didn’t get the girl… obviously but I think we are still best friends that’s all I can ask for and I really hope that it will stay that way as long as she’s happy I’m too.. ^^

I’d like to end this post with one picture representing a very small part of my memories about her…

Wish me luck for a looooong lasting friendship like we had it before I ruined everything…

The choices are wide-spread, hard to overlook but still there are some aspects which should be taken into consideration. Of course the following ultra-short reviews are just MY opinion and are by far not complete – mentioning all aspects would be just impossible…

Meego

Nokias and Intels new platform merges the hardly spread Maemo platform (used on earlier Nokia tablets and the N900 supercomputer.. eh mobile phone) and the Intel Moblin distro for Netbooks. It’s base is fully open source, everything is build upstream – as far as possible, communication happens in the open (mailinglists, …) and it is still under very active development. but it is not ready yet.. Nokias next high end phone will be powered by the meego touch libs and therefore be a Meego SOMEHOW but not really… its base platform will still be a modified Fremantle – called Harmatan… so you aren’t getting a true Meego phone with the next released Nokia phone..

I also doubt that the first generation of Meego will be able to incorporate all the features Maemo currently has AND provide even more to keep up with the competition. Well if it has Ovi maps it’s mine Really missing a fully featured ovi maps on my N900 running Maemo so I hope that once we are able to run a fully working Meego on N900 that it will not only be the free parts but also those with Nokias proprietary extras (maps, …)

At the moment everything we can do is waiting for an awesome platform with a bright future imho with my favourite platform underlying.. Qt <3

Symbian

The widest spread operating system for phones to date… currently it rapidly loosed market shares because there were some design desicions taken which were not the best – or Nokia just took too long to come up to par with the competition or succeed them – even if it has some strong points where all the others can’t compete (synchronisation, business features, …).

But I think that the future will show us that Symbian has also a bright future as with Symbian ^4 it will receive a completely reworked/redesigned UI and with the power and uncountable hours of work which have gone into the underlying libraries I think that could very well be a very big step into the right direction. And again: we are getting a Qt UI although it’s not libmeegotouch but another one: Orbit – sadly they are not compatible…

With Symbian ^3 Nokia already made big step into the right direction (Nokia N8) and I think that will continue with Symbian ^4. We’ve gotta wait

One important point also worth mentioning and really needed for Symbian and Meego to succeed is the AppStore… Ovi Store to be precise. This needs to be vastly improved imho…

Android

Frankenstein.. ehm… well.. at least it looks like that to me from a technical POV java based all over, a modified Linux kernel, a pretty closed stack… the opposite to Meego… but apparently it is well received by non-geeks its market shares are RAPIDLY increasing taking away Apple its market share… so far so good

well.. if it works.. why not… it will never be my favourite platform in terms of programming or openness… but well.. it’s a phone… it needs to work… and look cool ^^ and obviously it fulfills those points… and its appstore is pretty good filled so yeah – if you like it – just use it

one thing really missing with Android is a synchronisation suite afaik (never had an Android phone myself) – HTC has got one (I think) – but there’s no common solution…

Maemo

life is over… not supported anymore… get yourself another solution (nitdroid anyone?) … or just be happy with it I’m running Maemo PR 1.2 on my N900 and I’m pretty happy with it

maybe someday I will upgrade to Meego (unsupported tough) when it’s stable enough or will go to nitdroid – if it fulfills my needs… who knows… at least I know that I’ve got the power at my hand with my N900

iOS

Everyone knows that strange company producing fruits… apples to be precisely… I don’t like their product policy to be honest… but they are well thought out, play nice together, are closed from the top to the bottom, only work with their own brothers and sisters and are white… or grey.. or black… with an apple on it…

Those who like it should use it… it’s just not what I need/want

Again long time no see… ^^ since the last time I’ve finished my military service (yeaaah), been to hospital quite a while (boooh) and am now trying to figure out how my life should look like… and where I want to begin…

My current plan is to take it slow and first get my technical stuff in order ^^ my brand new Nokia N900, meego, ArchLinux, Maemo, buildserver, mediacenter pc, flashing all kinds of devices ranging from my router to my WDTV Live and my phone (yes I had meego running on my N900 ^^).

Job search has already begun and all other life related things are creeping along slowly… as always ^^

but I think I’ll post about those in detail later… just wanted to tell ya: I’m still alive (and kicking).. well no… alive.. that’s it.. nothing more nothing less ^^

Well… sort of… clicking is a luxury nobody needs… and… well… do you care about your keyboard? I hate to type… so firefox-qt got rid of that problem for me

For those looking for a screenshot… here it comes… who needs a visual scrollbar? or clickable menu bars?

You may ask yourself how to get it to run… Are you on ArchLinux? Then your chances of getting it to work are rather high on other distros you can maybe take some guesses from the PKGBUILD files on how to get it to run… or the patches… take whatever you need

On ArchLinux Two packages are needed to get it to work:

These packages are 1:1 based on the current firefox and xulrunner packages I got with pacman (I got the source using pacman -G firefox xulrunner), I didn’t modify any copyright, etc… this was just a “Make-it-work-thingy”… Everything needed to get it to work isn’t really my work – I just put it together.. from various sites… ranging from wikis to some strange japanese sites…

Well… happy testing… happy bugfixing (hopefully)… and happy hacking (you gotta do that if you want firefox-qt to succeed)… sadly I don’t have enough time to do it myself…

and today I again got the feeling that many things in C# are looking good at first sight but when you look closer you just begin to think: “WTF”

One example: I wrote a copy constructors because a normal assignment didn’t do a call by value… fine.. it worked for primitive variables.. the byte[] and char[] were resistent.. they thought: “No I STILL want to be a reference” .. so.. Array.Copy .. you need to call a class method to copy a f**** primitive array….

Well.. that was just one of the uglier experiences of mine with C# .. maybe I did something wrong but my C++ skills tell me that everything I did was fine

If someone knows better please correct me

Atm I’m just happy to turn my back to C# for another year.. at least.. hopefully.. I fear that after I’ve finished school I’ll be forced again to develop sthg. in C#… companies using Qt are rare.. and I’ve tried to convince some employees of the company I was at during the internship to use Qt … impossible.. they are just too.. used to C# .. they can’t believe there’s something simpler, they can’t believe there’s something more stable and useful out there.. it’s really really sad.. I’ve tried my best but I failed…

If anyone knows a company using Qt for their daily work who is searching for new employees .. especially after the next year (I suspect December 2010 (civillian/military service)) .. would be REALLY glad about that…

NO.. you get pretty good scripting capabilities using the qtscriptgenerator

They expose nearly 100% of the Qt api.. I hear you crying: “BUT THAT’S A SECURITY THREAT!” .. and I fully agree.. so it’s still up to you, to decide what you wanna do… maybe only allowing to use part of the qt modules, maybe just exporting some classes/functions.. it’s up to you to decide, which scripting capabilities you want to offer your developers and how you want to prevent scriptkiddies from taking over your machine

This whole stuff is still really new to me so forgive me if I told ya complete bull**** ^^

I’m also looking forward to the kdevelop bindingsgenerator getting ripped out and ported to be useful for normal bindings.. reason for this is that as far as I’ve heard recently the qtscriptgenerator is pretty out of date technologywise and the kdevelop bindingsgenerator is much better from the technical pov..

Hope we’ll be looking into a bright scripting future.. the possibilities are just too cute to resist
