Handy cams

Hey!

Some posts ago I told ya that I’ll post pics of my new notebook… well.. today I’ve transfered them from my only cam …. a handycam (nokia 6300, 2MP) to my pc… they look AWFUL! … I won’t post them until you really ask me to… you can actually see that it’s a notebook and it’s connectors and so forth .. but the quality is beyond good and evil ^^

In other news I made some progress in Allevo’s settings dialog.. although now I have to fight with references in C++…. pretty long since I had to do that the last time… can’t remember exactly how I have to write the code that it works.. well.. I’ll see ^^

Also I’ve started work on another project… “Imagine” .. it’s based on an idea from my brother… an Photo manager with tagging (person tagging), sorting, renaming, slideshow, metainformation and much more capabilities… I’ll blog more about it later … it’s now much too late today (or tomorrow.. put it how you like it)

I’ve also discussed a bit about Sabayon Control Center with sjieke, one member of our team.. will be an interesting challenge.. and I’ve now seen for the first time that I have much to learn… today I was confronted with design patterns.. never heard of them before… but they seam to be a “cool” thing ^^

So I think I’ll go and get some sleep before my head crashes with the keyboard :D

    Hi,

you seem to have found the ideal notebook just a half year before me ;-)

I am using an acer travelmate 800 and need a replacement soon.

I’d like to ask you some things I can only get from a user – I hope you dont mind.

Has your notebook the non glare 1680 display?
Is it bright enough to work outside with it (without direct sunlight of course)?
Do you run linux on it (I assume so from your posts)?
Are all devices working with it (i.e. bluetooth)?
Is HDMI output working with it?
Does it have turbo memory and is it useful with linux?
How long can you use it for writing/internet (low load) on battery?
    Would you buy it again?

    Thank you very much!

    Hey!

I’ve got 2 words for you: “Buy it” :D Seriously.. it’s the best notebook I ever had and know of to a really acceptable price.

    To answer your questions:
1.) it is nearly non glare I’d say. I’ve seen displays glaring MUCH more. Yes it’s 1680×1050 .. I absolutely love it :D
2.) Yep.. openSUSE 11.1. Works like a charm.. the proprietary NVIDIA driver is a bit of a problem… at least it’s a bit unstable on openSUSE. Could be a distribution problem.. don’t know
3.) Everything I need works (lan (opensuse 11.0 had problems here — had to install a different kernel module (r8169/r8168 problem.. don’t remember)/wlan/card reader/bluetooth/hdmi/vga/brightness/Suspend to Ram/Suspend to disk/camera)
what does NOT work is the finterprint reader :-(
behaviour with the wlan switch is also a bit strange iirc… didn’t need this for some time so I don’t know if it’s still the case
4.) See above (short answer: yes)
5.) I have configured it not to have turbo memory cause I’ve got 4GB RAM already and I have no use for this M$ technology xD
6.) Hm.. good question.. on Windows Vista x64 I’ve got 4:10 with a 9 cell battery iirc (didn’t need my battery for my time :p ) .. on linux I get something around 3:40 I think.. problem here is on both systems that I can’t set the GPU clock .. means that the graphicscard runs always as it wants ^^ (windows: battery saving, linux: dynamic)
7.) Definately! 2 of my class mates have a broken notebook atm and are also searching for an alternative one.. and they’ve come to the conclusion that it’s still the best available :-)

To conclude, my spec: (can’t remember if I’ve posted it before ^^) — name of the barebone is Compal JHL90

    Intel Core2Duo P9500, 2,5GHz, 6MB 2ndLevel Cache
    4GB DDR2 533Mhz (think it’s 533..maybe 667.. can’t remember)
    NVIDIA 9600M GT 512MB DDR2
    Bluetooth, Intel 4965AGN
    320GB HD 5400rpm

Hope I was able to help you a bit ^^

    Bye, Bernhard

You helped me a lot. That really sounds very interesting. Thank you very much!

I am from germany, but will be near Insbruck for skiing next week. Maybe I can have a look at the real thing in the shop there.

One last thing: What do you mean with 3) …camera? Does this nb have a builtin webcam that runs with linux? Haven’t seen this on the shop page.

From Germany going to Innsbruck… so… maybe you have luck and can actually see the same notebook as mine .. the reseller/shop I’ve bought mine is called DiTech.
    http://www.ditech.at

Afaik it has one shop in Innsbruck (more information on the homepage).

The name of the notebook from DiTech is

    Dimotion Strongbook S5

configured to the specs from above.

I’ve got a 1,3Mpx video camera at the top of the screen (iirc)… Worked out of the box with openSUSE.. was a real surprise seeing myself when I opened up Kopete’s Configuration dialog :D

Have fun with skiing and buying a new notebook :D

PS: I wonder how bad my english sounds for another German-speaking ^^

    Hi,

back from skiing (both of us, as it seems).
Unfortunately the weather was sooo good I couldn’t convince myself to go to Innsbruck for a notebook, except for one day where it was so bad that it was too dangerous to drive (roadblock before I get back – or worse…).

So I’m still without new notebook :-(
But in the meantime I have at least seen some youtube videos of the compal jhl90 and they make me think the display is not what I’m looking for. I need less glare or at least a real test outside at a sunny day.

I contacted DiTech and they told me, I could buy the notebook via http://www.ditech.de but I cannot send it back just because the display is not ok for me. Too bad, but I can understand that, because the notebook would be customized – what should they do with it?

    The search continues…

PPS: havent heard you yet, so I wouldnt comment on the sound ;-) but your english looks very good to me :-)
